 | | MIYAVIMiyavi began his music career under the name Miyabi in the band Dué le quartz. He was quickly noticed, not only for writing most of the songs and playing guitar very successfully, but also for his rock star attitude.
He started his solo career by opening his website right after Dué le quartz had officially disbanded in 2002. In some ways, his continuation in the music industry seemed only natural, as he still had plenty more to give.
As he continued alone, he changed the spelling of his name to Miyavi (in Japanese Miyabi and Miyavi are pronounced the same, although written differently) and asked his fans to write it like that when they were refering to him during his solo career, which, according to him, looks more like himself. The artist is still very grateful to Dué le quartz, and he even tattooed the band name onto his hand, but now as a solo artist he was free from compromises.
His released his first album Gagaku in November 2002. It was quite dark and experimental. The style of his singles changed a lot, from pop to rock to some very unique sounds: it seemed that Miyavi had an urge to try out all the ideas he had gotten over the years, now that he finally had the chance. In the next two years he released 4 singles and 1 album. At this time, Miyavi performed all the instrumental recordings on his releases and obviously took care of the vocals as well.
Throughout his career, he has gone back and forth between genres, which doesn't allow fans to give him any specific classification.
In November 2004, Miyavi signed with Universal Music, going major after only two years of being an Indies artist signed with PS Company, though he continues on with both labels. He added a new nickname for himself, MYV, as well as changing his whole appearance. For his major debut he released with his single Rock no gyakushuu -Super star no jouken- / 21sekikei koushinkyoku; this began a series of multiple versions for each release.
In the summer 2005, Miyavi's large, yet playful ego got even bigger as he releases the album miyavi - miyavizm shugi. Around this time, the solo artist realized he could not do everything on his own and began having others perform the instruments, with the exception of the guitar, during recording sessions.
Miyavi is an artist who is not afraid of change; this is clear from his releases in 2006 starting with Kekkonshiki no uta / Are you ready to ROCK? (which was actually released in 2005) to his work with MYV☆POPS. The sound in these releases were completely different from anything he had done in the past. He had spicy salsa with Señor Señora Señorita and spunky jazz with Gigpig Boogie; of course the usual pop and rock are included.
At the end of 2006, Miyavi participated in a charity concert for UNICEF.
This unique and very talented artist has a lot to look forward to in his career and even though he’s been in the music industry for almost ten years, he still has a lot more to give! |
